Musical Bio
While growing up in a musical family in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Matt began playing at a young age, exploring guitar, drums, and finally piano. After studying music at Columbia College Chicago, he earned a music scholarship to Michigan State University. With a repertoire that spans classical music, soul and R&B, jazz, bossa nova, to classic rock, Matt is at home performing for a wide range of audiences and venues. He has performed throughout the Chicagoland area, Southern California, and Southwest Florida with acclaimed artists. Formative experiences included performing with the late great Marcus Belgrave (who provided timely mentorship), Maurice Brown, J2 & the Bizzness, the Mike Montano Band, Mr. Trimble, Wendell “Musicman” Moore, and Robert Baglione. Matt spent time as house pianist at the Bakersfield Jazz workshop at Le Corrouse Rouge where he also performed a Mulgrew Miller Tribute concert. Since moving to Southwest Florida, he has performed with Matt Ragas and the Stable Geniuses, and accompanied many other vocalists including Suzanne Lucas, Shari Morningstar, James Jones, Denise Blondeau, Jeremy Russell, and Kelly Broadway. He has performed at the Jazz Showcase club in Chicago, at Santa Anita Park raceway, the Padre Hotel, at the Art Ovation Hotel, the Hot House (Chicago), the St. Regis Hotel, the Wyvern Hotel, Sunseeker Resort, Longboat Island Chapel, SRQ Waterworks, Sarasota Yacht Club, local country clubs, and retirement communities. He has also performed recently at Daruma Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Lounge in Sarasota. Other recent performances include seven shows on a world premiere musical, Syncopated Avenue, with the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe. Sabo teaches piano at Suzuki Institute School of Music in Sarasota. Matt is available for private lessons, weddings, private events, solo performances or small groups, or as an accompanist.
