Musical Bio
While growing up in a musical family in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Matt began playing at a young age, exploring guitar, drums, and finally piano. After studying music at Columbia College Chicago, he earned a music scholarship to Michigan State University. With a repertoire that spans classical music, soul and R&B, jazz, bossa nova, to classic rock, Matt is at home performing for a wide range of audiences and venues. He has performed throughout the Chicagoland area, Southern California, and Southwest Florida with acclaimed artists. Some of the most formative experiences included time spent performing with the late great Marcus Belgrave (who provided timely mentorship), Maurice Brown, J2 & the Bizzness, the Mike Montano Band, and Mr. Trimble. Matt spent time as house pianist at the Bakersfield Jazz workshop at Le Corrouse Rouge where he also performed a Mulgrew Miller Tribute concert. After moving to Southwest Florida, he performed with Matt Ragas and the Stable Geniuses, as well as accompanying many other vocalists including Suzanne Lucas, Shari Morningstar, James Jones, Denise Blondeau, and Kelly Broadway. He has performed at the Jazz Showcase club in Chicago, at Santa Anita Park raceway, the Padre Hotel, at the Art Ovation Hotel, the Hot House (Chicago), the St. Regis Hotel, the Wyvern Hotel, local country clubs and other private event venues, such as Longboat Island Chapel, and SRQ Waterworks. He has also performed at Daruma Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Lounge in Sarasota. Matt is available for piano lessons, weddings, private events, solo performances, trios, or as an accompanist.
